Innovation Happy Hour

Basecamp

Calling all THINKERS, STARTERS and DOERS.
It's time to connect with others in the heart of the Innovation District Chattanooga.

Innovation has become an overused word - not just in business - but in almost every walk of life. In fact, this month's speaker Matt McLelland believes it’s used so often he fears it’s beginning to lose its meaning.

This month we will mix and mingle during Happy Hour and then Matt will walk you through the hype surrounding the word, offer some definitions and clarity, describe how his company formally approaches innovation, discuss a few of their projects, share a few thoughts on building a culture of innovation, and give some ideas on how you can influence innovative thought without your own organization – regardless of your position

More about Matt McLelland:
Matt is the Innovation Research Manager at Kenco Innovation Labs – a department within Kenco Logistics Services. Kenco, the biggest company in Chattanooga you may have never heard of – is a leading provider of integrated logistics solutions that include distribution, fulfillment, transportation management, material handling services, real estate management, and information technology. Their small team comes to work every day with the sole purpose of identifying, researching, and prototyping creative ideas that show potential to impact the supply chain. Collaborating with customers, entrepreneurs (like LPG’s Dynamo Accelerator), and vendors from multiple industries enables Kenco to think outside the box and create unique, customer-driven solutions. Matt often speak at local, regional, and international events on topics that include innovation in logistics, disruption, our aversion to risk, creating a culture of innovation, and discussing the projects / prototypes they tackle in the lab.

NOTE: This Happy Hour is being hosted at Whiteboard, 701 Cherry Street - not Miller Plaza.

Talk Shop Tuesday with CoLab

Basecamp

Join us for the upcoming Talk Shop Tuesday with Lauri Moyle of Thankful Gleaner! He will discuss why it's important that a business owner articulates his or her core values and the outworking of those values in the operation of the business and in product design.

Lauri Moyle started Thankful Gleaner as a social enterprise and consultancy to help businesses do good. He has a background in policy shaping having researched and developed a plan of action on two long-term issues relating to technology ethics. As part of a broad coalition he then successfully lobbied at the national level in the UK for these proposals to be implemented. While completing his MA in theology, politics and faith-based organizations at Kings College London he realized that business far more than most spheres has the ability to have a quick impact in shaping society for the good. That is one of the reasons he pivoted toward business consultancy. He is interested in the intersection of not-for-profit revenue streams, social enterprises, businesses that want to align their ethical core with their business practices as well as impact investing.

Butch Ross

Noon Tunes

Typically the dulcimer is used for playing simple tunes and accompanying the voice; most people can learn a song or two within a few minutes of first encountering the instrument. Which is probably why the one phrase you'll hear a lot at a Butch Ross concert is "I didn't know you could do THAT on a mountain dulcimer!" Ross has taken a simple folk instrument and energized it with technical wizardry, inventive arrangements and a healthy dose of rock-n-roll attitude.

Talk Shop Tuesday with Platt Boyd

Basecamp

Join us for talk Shop Tuesday with Platt Boyd, CEO and founder of Branch Technology, who will be leading a discussion about design thinking. The story of Branch’s inception to infancy will be used as the backdrop to discuss lessons learned about creativity, innovation, failure & success with lots of visual fodder along the journey.

About Platt Boyd

Before founding Branch Technology, Platt practiced as an award-winning architect for 15 years. His fascination with natural beauty and amazing structures led to the initiation of a new technology using freeform 3D printing combined with conventional materials to robotically prefabricate architectural assemblies with resource stewardship and unprecedented design freedom. The Cellular Fabrication (C-FAB™) method takes its cues from proven methods observed in nature, where material use is minimized, but form is free to become almost anything.
